Deepening crisis in Nepal

Posted by admin on 28th February 2006

The political situation in the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal grows increasingly chaotic. Local municipal elections recently called by King Gyanendra, who assumed direct rule after sacking the prime minister and his Cabinet a year ago, had a voter turnout of just 22 percent, abnormally low for that country. No candidates ran for more than half of the some 4,000 posts up for election. Read the rest of this entry »

Moriarty Approves of another State of Emergency: King Is Back

Posted by S Green on 28th February 2006

The title should have been, “Washington Calls Back Moriarty,” and the first few lines should have been, “Party time. I knew it. I wished for it. I even cautioned him that this day would come if Moriarty did not stop the media rollercoaster ride.”

The odd thing about this guy is he does not listen, and he continues enjoying the media frenzy, regardless of positive or negative ramifications. Some twelve days ago I cautioned him through this blog to limit his comments to the cause of the movement, to the removal of the king. Despite the caution, he goes on the national TV on Sunday and shamelessly spreads a phobia on behalf of the crown, “Nepal is risking to collapse if the parties do not cooperate with the king.”  And he adds, “This polarization (irreconcilability) will give the Maoists a huge gain.” Would it, really? He speaks without any political math, let alone be diplomacy. The Maoists will gain everyday if the parties make the mistake of having a talk with the king except to make his easy exit. Gyanendra thinks that he can have a better life elsewhere than in Nepal if he is not the kind of king that we suffered under before April 6 1990, the day his brother rightly knelt before the will of the people. Boucher: A Trouble For Rocca’s Moriarty?

Posted by S Green on 28th February 2006

This is a snippet of the difference.

Richard A Boucher was appointed to the post two weeks ago replacing Christina Rocca.  As soon he is appointed, he differs in language from Rocca/Moriarty’s: “We believe Nepal’s internal struggle can only be addressed by the King taking steps to reverse the course he embarked on over a year ago - last February 1st - and to return to democratic government.”  Moriarty will have to adjust to echo Boucher’s language if he wants to stay around a little longer.

Boucher’s background is different from Christina Rocca’s. She begins her career at CIA in 1982. At the CIA, she was in charge of contacts with Islamic guerrilla groups where, in the 1980s, she oversaw the delivery of Stinger missiles to Afghan Mujahiddeen. She resigned from the CIA in 1997 and started working as an advisor to Republican Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS). She was nominated in April 2001 to her State Department post to replace Karl Inderfurth. Among her contributions is a sort of balanced approach to India and Pakistan, “supporting increased relations with India without dumping Pakistan.”  Read the rest of this entry »

Exercise Discretion; Know your Culture and then decide

Posted by S Green on 28th February 2006

By Rishi Amatya

“For what is man’s present but an extended past” if you let, it might resound Shakespeare, if you do not then it’s plain old me adhering to the belief I have had for quite some time now. In simpler terms, the present of the man is his past extended. The past guides the future in up to that context from what was hitherto the present vibes along with the music it has left to echo. The past in its more lucidity has its pronounced effects in man in nearly every thing along side the culture and tradition he has been brought up in; for it is that potion in which he then makes the bases of his life - a foundation for what is to come if you will; for it is the cauldron into which he brews the future of his life.

Badal escapes attempt on his life?

Posted by hit on 28th February 2006

The Maoist commander-in-chief Badal alias Ram Bahadur Thapa has escaped an attempt on his life in rural areas of Nepal recently, according to Maoist sources.

The source claimed that a suspicious cadre who had joined the Maoist militant group as staff member of Badal was working as a kitchen hand and was waiting for an opportunity to make Badal his easy prey. But Badal’s intelligence group exposed the insidious plans of the suspicious Maoist cadre and got rid of him instantly before he could carry out his plans against the Maoist commander. फुलको बर्षाबीच पशुपतिको दर्शन

Posted by admin on 26th February 2006

Read the rest of this entry »

Crown Under Oil Tankers & Security Post

Posted by S Green on 25th February 2006

By S. Green

At one place the Maoists seize nine of NOC’s oil tankers, and at another, they launch a repeat attack at a security post in the same neighborhood.

My blogology reads that the Maoists on the surface are trying to give an impression that they are the ones who are the vanguards of the movement. This is their desperate attempt to outsmart the parties, as clearly the parties are taking caution to keep the Maoists at bay but with the strategic repetition of the rhetoric that they will stick to the “historic text” of the 12-point understanding. At this point of the game, the idea of “sticking” to the understanding in question is more strategical to dodge (or postpone) direct confrontation with the Maoists than anything else.   Read the rest of this entry »
