A Visit to a Maoist Base Camp

These pictures were taken during a trip to Harnamadhi VDC in Makwanpur district on July 18-19, 2006. The village is about 16 kms east of Hetauda between the Mahabharat and Chure mountain ranges.

The purpose of the visit was to observe a “temporary” Maoist base camp, where their fighters and milita were encamped. It was a trip organized by the Maoists for the benefit of journalists, and therefore, offers a strictly one-sided view of current developments. Opportunities to interview villagers away from Maoist minders were few.

Love to hear your impression after this visit. Fro what i hear is that this a ploy by the maoist to encircle the valley for their final assult in October.

As I see it, they are still a rag tag solders living off on a idealogy that is empty from inside. I firmly believe if they handover their arms they will chased like a stray dogs. They just do not fit in Nepal and its culture and people- quite an alien.

Lets us learn from what is happening in Lebanon. Two parallel armies one belonging to Hezbollah and the other is state controlled.
It will never work in Nepal too. It is difficult to visualise a democratic sovreign state where a party has its army. Mr Prachanda if you are honest about peace harmony and equality have a think over it again.Or is it too much to ask?
